Designer Shoe Cake...

It Started with the request from a repeat client named April. "Can you make a cool cake for a 30th birthday?"
Us: "Of course we can, what did you have in mind?"
April: "She like Shoes, shoes, shoes".....and Chocolate!
Us: "we'll make it happen"....

And so the preparations began....here we were making shoe molds out of gumpaste and coming up with a cool concept.... The design in mind was for a few logos and designer shoe designs....then a vision of being in a store and being able to choose one of those shoes off the platform racks was born....
After some hard work and frustration with that damn Choo.... (originally it had two thinner straps at the front..but I was too frustrated as it kept breaking) ...I improvised, and I think the bling at the front looked better anways.
 Here is the final product.

We are very proud of this cake, as the end result was what we were looking for.
I received a message from April yesterday, who was too sick to even attend the event. But she said she had heard from the committe members who were there and she texted me: " FYI - Heard the party was renamed 'total cake boss...and barb somebodys birthday". I thought that was funny....and flattering too.
What are your thoughts on our final design?

Tired of looking looking at melting snow? This spring bouquet... on Twitpic

Tired of looking looking at melting snow? This spring bouquet... on Twitpic

It was my grandmother's 87th birthday yesterday and what better than to make a spring bouquet cake to cheer everyone up. The weather has been dreary....okay, some occasional periods of sun- but mainly crappy, cold and still snow on the ground. I think we've all had a long enough WINTER and want the SPRING to arrive. I keep telling myself it's just around the corner...and sooner than you know it, it'll be here. Until then, take a peek at the photo and be reminded of what's soon to arrive! Happy Early Spring!

"You Nailed It"

Strange title for a post? Maybe? But in this case, it's a great feeling as I had three clients all use that exact same expression today. It made me feel great that I had "nailed it" in terms of what they were looking for with their next cake/event.

Most people only see their final product when they pick it up or  it arrives at their venue. What they don't see is the hard work that goes into each custom cake/cookie or cupcake....and it all starts with the first connection/quote given to the client.

I try my hardest to listen first because my opinion may not always be what someone else's taste is. But I think I'm getting the hang of figuring out what people want even when they don't. I have a lot of potential client's who really just aren't sure of what they want and that's where I LOVE to step in and give a lot of options/choices to people. Yes, it's a bit of legwork and sometimes very time consuming on my end. But to hear that sentence "You Nailed It".........it feels good! YAY... I'm glad we are meshing with our clients and making them happy right from the start. I can feel that this will be the beginning of a great working relationship and I hope that I get to hear that over and over again. It means I'm doing something right!

Social Networking

So who knew that keeping up with social media/networking was going to be so much hard work? I swear I barely  have enough time to make cakes, eat, sleep and then I have to update Facebook, update my Twitter accounts and yes, even update my Blog! Although it's taking me a crapload of time- I'm doing it!  Why?

Well because it's one of the best ways to keep in touch with other cake decorators, prospective clients, friends, family and you know I think I kind of like it. I'm quite proud that I managed to create this all by myself, just call me the "Cake decorator, techy cool lady"! Okay, now I'm just being silly, must be the lack of sleep kicking in.

Bottom line, I am grateful that the world of technology and social networking is here. It's forever evolving, and I'm forever trying to keep up!   Good night!

Cupcake Couture worth every penny....

So I just settled down after a really long day....it was a late night of cake making- those 3am nights gotta stop......but they pay off and I was happy to hear that our clients loved the cake. Then I headed out for a "cupcake couture" class and I have to say what an amazing time I had. It was an intimate group and I learned a few new techniques and some new cool designs too. It was worth the drive to Pickering!

Guess I know what we'll be doing after we finish our orders for the week! \
It's  CUUUUPCAAAAAKE Time.. you know, in my Pauly D voice! LOL
Good night everyone!

First Official Blog Entry....

So it's only taken me over a year to get this blog created. I'm not the most technical gal out there, but I did it. Booya!! I'm so excited to be sharing my thoughts, frustrations, creations with all of you. I've been so inspired by so many cake artists via the web and their blogs that I hope I can gain a following of fans that are inspired by my work.

I've managed to add photos via Picasa and a link to our Facebook page. Twitter is next...we'll first I have a few cakes quotes to finish. But you get the point..I'm moving on this.

Here's two cakes we made this past this weekend...what do you think?? We had two very happy boys for sure!

Well, I'm off to see if this post worked.

Cheers to the beginning of It's a Cake Thing's blogging life!!! Please bear with me as I figure things out! This is going to be a fun ride...I can just feel it!
